WORLD TENNIS TOUR 2025

Tennis Slovenia remains committed to its goals, with one of the most important, the support of professional tennis, which includes the organization of ITF World Tennis Tour tournaments. In 2024, 20 tournaments were held, continuing the medium-term vision. Special emphasis is placed on a sustainable project that distributes tournaments along railway routes, offering free train travel across the country.

In accordance with the Strategic Guidelines 2025–2030, Tenis Slovenia launched an ambitious project in 2021 aimed at strengthening elite competitive tennis by increasing the number of professional tennis tournaments across Slovenia and raising the prize funds, which by 2024 had reached a total value of $610,000.

The ITF World Tennis Tour (previously known as ITF Circuit or Futures) is a series of lower and mid-tier professional tennis tournaments organized by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and held worldwide. These tournaments provide a professional pathway from junior ITF competitions to the highest levels of professional tennis. The results of ITF WTT tournaments are included in the WTA and ATP rankings, enabling players to progress to elite WTA and ATP tournaments, ultimately leading to Grand Slam events. The ITF organizes a total of 1,050 WTT tournaments for both men and women in 70 countries worldwide, with participants from as many as 200 countries.

The series of professional tournaments follows the main railway routes throughout Slovenia. The tournaments begin in the spring in the Slovenian Istria region, then expand in two directions across the country, concluding in the northeast of Slovenia. The entire project culminates in the fall in Ljubljana with the prestigious WTA Zavarovalnica Sava Ljubljana tournament, which boasts a prize fund of $125,000. In the future, this will be followed by the ATP Challenger Ljubljana, continuing the tradition of developing professional tennis in Slovenia.

Slovenian Railways, a supporter of Tenis Slovenia, provides free transportation for players, companions, and officials as part of the project. This significantly reduces transportation costs for domestic and international participants and their companions. Upon arriving in Slovenia, players can travel free of charge to any of the cities hosting the tournaments, and after the event, they can travel to the next venue. “This initiative will, in the medium term, increase interest in the tournaments and extend the stay of participants and their companions from around the world. This solution will enable approximately 3,000 stakeholders to travel easily, economically, and free of charge between the locations hosting professional tennis tournaments in the span of one year. The project is designed sustainably, which is already garnering widespread support, as it is focused on a green future and offers numerous socio-cultural, sports, environmental, and tourism benefits. Additionally, the project stimulates additional financial flows related to accommodation, participant spending, temporary jobs during tournament organization, increased demand for hospitality and tourism services, and tax revenues.

The business-financial model for the execution of professional tennis tournaments is designed so that Tenis Slovenia, together with the Slovenian Tourist Board (STO), co-finances 60% of all tournament organization costs, 30% is contributed by the local municipality, and the remaining 10% is covered by the event-hosting club, which provides the necessary sports infrastructure, including courts, associated facilities, and professional staff,” said Gregor Krušič, Director of Tenis Slovenia, about the innovative project that significantly contributes to the development of elite tennis in Slovenia.
